Judges Who Battle Back: Inside Popping Forever's Warrior Edition

Most battle judges sit behind a table and hold a score sheet. At Summer Dance Forever in Amsterdam, they get in the circle.

This year's Summer Dance Forever started August 25 at Paradiso and other venues around the city, and battles ran through at least August 30. Popping Forever, the popping battle, was held Thursday, August 27 in Paradiso's main hall. It ran with the Warrior Edition, a battle format built with SNIPES. For poppers, it's one of the toughest rooms in the world.
How Popping Forever Works
You don't just show up and battle. Dancers register at Paradiso in the morning and go through open preselections, where each dancer gets 45 seconds on the floor. The battle itself ran that evening.
Then the Warrior Edition kicks in. The Top 6 dancers don't stop at beating each other. They have to take on six "warriors": former winners, finalists and judges. The warriors' names stay secret until the battle starts. Whoever makes it through, the Top 3 then face the three judges in the Judge Battles. This year's judges were Nelson, Boogie Frantick and HYA.
The crowd plays a part too. The audience at Paradiso helps crown the Forever Warrior champion, who earns prize money and a chance to judge at a future edition.

Why It Matters
Popping was built in the circle. Boogaloo Sam and the Electric Boogaloos developed it out of Fresno, California in the late 1970s, and from day one the scene settled arguments with bodies, not opinions. A judge who has to battle back has to back up every call with their own hit, their own musicality, their own control.
It also closes the loop. Win, get respect, become a judge, then get called out by the next generation. No one sits above the floor. Some will call it a gimmick. The answer is the same as always: step in the circle.
For scenes outside Amsterdam, here's the takeaway. Battles get better when the people judging stay in the culture and keep their own skills sharp. Panic 39 has been around the popping scene since 1999, and the best events we've seen were always the ones where the legends were still down to get on the floor.
New to Popping? Quick Answers
What is popping? A street dance built on quickly tensing and releasing muscles, called a "hit," in time with the music. Dancers add styles like waving, tutting and boogaloo on top of it.
Where does it come from? California. Boogaloo Sam and the Electric Boogaloos started it in Fresno in the 1970s, and it spread through Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
Is popping the same as breaking or locking? No. Breaking is the floor-based dance with toprock, footwork, power moves and freezes. Locking is a separate funk style with its own history. Popping has its own technique, its own battles and its own rules.
Where can I watch it? Popping Forever and Summer Dance Forever are held in Amsterdam each summer, and local battles run in cities across the U.S. Check your city's scene for the next one.
