Eyedea, 16 Years Gone: The St. Paul Battle Champ Who Outgrew the Cypher

Scribble Jam, 1999. A 17-year-old from St. Paul walks into Cincinnati with nothing but a mouth full of ideas and walks out with the emcee title. His name: Eyedea.

That's how a lot of people in the underground first heard of Micheal Larsen, born November 9, 1981. Between 1997 and 2001 he worked the freestyle battle circuit and kept winning. Scribble Jam in '99, where his battle with P.E.A.C.E. of Freestyle Fellowship has been ranked by LA Weekly among the greatest rap battles ever. The Rock Steady Anniversary battle in 2000, a stage built by the b-boy community that gave hip hop its dance (Eyedea broke too, so that one hit different). Then the HBO-televised Blaze Battle, hosted by KRS-One. He wasn't the loudest in the room. He was the one who made the room go quiet while he figured out what he was about to say.

From the battle circuit to Rhymesayers

The offers came fast. Eyedea reportedly turned down a bigger deal tied to Diddy and went with Rhymesayers Entertainment, the Minneapolis label Slug of Atmosphere helped build, and he became part of its foundation. Along with his childhood friend, turntablist DJ Abilities (Max Keltgen), he formed Eyedea & Abilities. They dropped First Born in 2001, followed by E&A in 2004 and By the Throat in July 2009. They toured hard, including the Def Jux-sponsored "Who Killed the Robots?" run, a title Eyedea came up with himself.

Underground hip hop is full of rappers who can spit. What set Eyedea apart was that he never stayed in one lane. Under the name Oliver Hart he put out a solo project in 2002, and he later poured himself into Face Candy and Carbon Carousel, bands that had more in common with experimental rock and jazz than boom bap. He wrote poetry and put out a book of poems and art with a painter. In 2010 he released When in Rome, Kill the King under his real name. He treated hip hop like a starting point, not a box.

Two official videos from By the Throat. "Smile" is the one fans played the day he died.

October 16, 2010

Eyedea died in his sleep at his home in St. Paul on October 16, 2010. He was 28. The medical examiner later ruled it accidental. More than 2,000 people showed up to a public memorial, and on what would have been his 29th birthday, November 9, a sold-out First Avenue held a tribute night with Slug as MC and a massive freestyle session to close it out. The second Face Candy record came out in 2011. In 2016, filmmaker Brandon Crowson released The World Has No Eyedea, a documentary built on old VHS footage and Eyedea's notebooks and co-produced by his mother, Kathy Averill, through Crushkill Recordings, the label Eyedea started himself.

Why it still matters in 2026

Sixteen years on, Eyedea is still the answer when somebody asks what the underground does that the mainstream can't. Battle-tested, but never just a battle rapper. Honest to a fault. Plenty of kids who grew up on cyphers and cassette tapes still run his verses back at 2 a.m. If you've never gone deep, start with First Born and work your way forward. Then go find the freestyle clips.

Rest in power, Mikey.
